Vic Toews and Adam Carroll in Hayez's Before the Inquisition (ca 1830s). |
Vic Toews' story is pertinent to the blog for two reasons -- Vic Toews is of Russlander Mennonite descent and the story is an amazingly predictable illustration of Postmodern digital network lifestyles and a Modernist's attempt to direct and contain the Postmodern... Perhaps a form of Scopes Monkey Trial in the United States which helped delineate the final stages of Modernity overthrowing the last of its pre-Modern or Scholastic Fideistic heritage.
Appreciable are Toew's dual moralities -- he seems to want to know and publish everything about everyone else, but protect that which embarrasses him. Also, based on earlier speeches and stances regarding the sanctity of marriage, he is obviously living in a dual morality that excludes his own early personal potential failings or weaknesses while using the reins of government to hold others to a higher legal standard -- as unimpressed Mennonite converts were wont to say in the pre-Reformation -- "give my regards to the priest, and also to the woman who serves as his wife." (The quote being a gross liberty taken from early Reformation anti-clerical tracts).
Amazingly, the good-natured Canadians are less keen towards the scandal aspect of Viki-leaks, in difference to many in the United States, but rather are focused on insuring the concept of fair play -- namely, that all Canadians are deserving of their personal privacy, regardless of rhetoric, regardless of position.
Adam Carroll's roll is also interesting as Toews has set himself up in the roll of the hypocritical, magistorial, interrogator (in Mennonite tradition, the voluptuous, foul-mouthed, hypocritical monk of the Inquisition in the Martyrs' Mirror) versus Carroll who almost assumes the Mennonite archetype of the confident believer being grilled for his faith and confident of the Truth of his position ... Is Troeltsch correct that all little virtuous churches eventually grow up to become Inquisitors with their own hands stained with the blood of martyrs? Is this not the very reason that Mennonites have long held to avoid holding public office, especially over non-believers (the magistracy)?
I do not have a link to an on-line version of the Mirror, but read it for yourself -- many of the inquisitions will match in character and manner the grilling of Carroll before Committee -- perhaps Toews studied his van Braght a bit too well as a child.
Again, this is not a personal commentary on Toews, but is meant merely as an illustration as to how traditional Anabaptist values might be evolving or are evident in the Postmodern culture of today.
